Phase II ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

What is Phase II orthodontic treatment and why do we use it?

Phase II orthodontic treatment refers to the second stage of a comprehensive orthodontic treatment plan, typically used for adolescents starting somewhere between 11-13 years old.  Phase II usually begins once all or most of the permanent teeth have erupted. It focuses on achieving long-term alignment and function of the teeth and jaws after the initial Phase I treatment.

Goals of Phase II Orthodontic Treatment include but are not limited to the following:

1. Any remaining orthodontic concerns after Phase I orthodontic treatment: Phase I orthodontic treatment corrects bite issues, creates space, and aligns teeth (see phase I orthodontic treatment for more information).  However, the child is still growing.  This means the jaws are still growing and new teeth are erupting.  These new teeth may need to be aligned and any remaining orthodontic concerns need to be addressed.

2.  Bite correction: Most bite corrections are resolved in phase I orthodontic treatment.  However, the child is still growing and although completion of phase I drastically reduces these issues, for moderate to severe cases, some bite corrections may still be necessary.  If the patient did not have a phase I then problems like crossbites, open bites, underbites, or overbites are addressed in phase II.

3.  Space creation: Creating space is best done when the child is younger and  growing.  If left for late adolescence, it may require surgical interventions.

4.  Aligning teeth for improved esthetics, function, and hygiene.

5.  Enhance appearance and self-esteem: a smile with straight teeth can boost the adolescents confidence and improve their self esteem.

Common Appliances used in Phase II orthodontic treatment:

1.  Full metal braces: Although we, at our practice, do not use metal braces some practices do with typical treatment being around 24 months depending on the complexity of the case.

2.  Klear aligners:  We prefer a more cosmetic approach and love our Aligners.  We think you will love them too! There are many benefits to our Klear Aligners!  For more information detailed information on Klear Aligners, see the Klear Aligners tab.

3.  Retainers or other custom devices to finalize results.
