Retainers

Once the teeth are moved into their correct position, the braces are removed. The next step is to use retainers to hold the teeth in the desired position. Retainers must be worn as instructed or the teeth WILL move back toward their original positions.

There are several types of retainers and each one has their advantages and disadvantages.  Retainers are chosen to maintain the specific issues that were corrected during orthodontic treatment.  The retainer must also be right for the patient’s lifestyle and preferences.

Fixed Retainers: A thin wire that is bonded to the back of the teeth, typically on the lower front teeth but can also be placed on the upper front teeth.  See the image below.

  • Advantages of a fixed retainer include that there is no risk of losing it because it is always there.  This means consistent retention.  Also, it is not usually visible from the front so it is esthetically pleasing.
  • Disadvantages of a fixed retainer include that it requires extra care when brushing and flossing to prevent the build up of plaque and calculus.  Also, like any appliance it can break or become loose and require repair or replacement.

Removable Retainers: There are two main types of removable retainers.  These types of retainers are worn for several hours a day or overnight.

1.  Hawley Retainers: Made of metal wire and acrylic. See image below

  • Advantages include: durable and long lasting.  Also, they can be adjusted if needed.
  • Disadvantages are that they are more visible when they are worn and may feel uncomfortable in the beginning until you get used to them.  See image below.

2.  Essix Retainers: Made from a clear, thin plastic.  See image below.

  • Advantages include that they are almost invisible so they are very esthetically pleasing.  They are also light weight and comfortable.
  • Disadvantages include they are less durable and prone to cracking or warping.  May need to be replaced frequently.

Regardless of what type of retainers you receive…REMEMBER; WEAR YOUR RETAINERS IN YOUR MOUTH, not in your pocket. Retainers work when you follow our instructions.

Clean your retainers! After meals, clean all parts of the retainer with a tooth brush.

Handle your retainers with care. Retainers are easy to lose. If you take your retainers out, always place them in your retainer case for safety.
